Let’s start getting into our bodies with a little gentle yoga.
Gentle yoga is a great way to begin to handle the tension in the body from the stress of a TBI and if you have any tension created from the accident that resulted in your TBI.
In this post, we will work on the tension in the shoulders and the neck. We will keep it super simple and you can do these stretches almost anywhere in just a few minutes.
Start sitting: Sit tall and relax your shoulders down, away from your ears. Take a breath and really feel how your body feels right now.
Shoulder Rolls: Roll your shoulders forward. Think of moving from your shoulder blades, not just the arms. Make the circles as large as you can. Bring your spine into it as well, rounding and arching with the movement. Roll them forward for 5 circles and then backward for 5 circles.
Neck Stretches: Sit tall again. Tip your right ear to your right shoulder. Reach down through your left arm to deepen the stretch. Then look down at an angle so the stretch comes more into the back of your neck, at an angle. Repeat on the the left side.
Twists: Keeping your knees steady, take your left hand outside of your right knee and your right hand behind you to grab the chair wherever you can. Lengthen your spine and gently twist. Do not twist the neck. Keep your nose aligned with the center of your chest. Hold for 3-4 breaths. Release and twist the other way.
